M. began his lengthy
musical career at age 13, as conga player for a ‘Motown’ style
cover-band. By age 17 he was already a veteran of dozens of hours on
stage and in professional recording studios around Los Angeles.
The early years included
music of all kinds- rock, blues, jazz, progressive, ethnic, industrial,
country. Segal made his name by easily adapting to whatever style or
approach was necessary for that ‘perfect’ performance or recording.
During the birth and heyday
of L.A.’s alleged punk rock scene, he and brother/guitarist Greg Segal
founded Paper Bag: improvisational music company, whose four SST
releases sold thousands of units worldwide, especially in Europe. The
extensive theory by which Bag: Theory improvises was co-authored by
Segal at that time.
In later years, he formed
The Strange MF’s with bassist Tom Shannon of Death & Taxe$ and
Dickies guitarist Enoch Hain. This was followed by Sativa Luv Box, with
vocalist Patrick Mata of Kommunity FK. Soon after, the band FreeHead was
assembled with Zoogz Rift/Saccharine Trust multi-instrumentalist Richie
Häss, and guitarist Jim C. Smith, co-creator of trail-blazing cartoon
The Ren and Stimpy Show.
M. is now proud to be
discovering new worlds of improvisation with Bag: Theory
co-founder/guitarist Anthony Cossa, legendary Paper Bag: bassist George
Radai and master woodwinds player Marc Mylar.
Segal continues to work
with other projects, including The Amadans, Music For Chameleons, Death
& Taxe$, Ritual, Two Separate Gorillas and many others. His unique
imprint will be heard on various film and television soundtracks early
next year.
