Long ago, George Radai was
dubbed ‘The Beast’ by KXLU Radio’s Splatt Winger, after one of
many live performances on the station’s most popular show Brain
Cookies. Though he has been described in many ways (‘crazy fingers’
is his favorite, The Beast is not) this title is to many of his fans the
most apt. The inquisitive and courageous have watched and listened to
his accomplishments with much amazement and respect.
After numerous professional
but short-lived bands, Radai became the bassist for
Paper
Bag: improvisational music company, and co-authored the writings that
form the basis for Bag: Theory. All four SST releases offered his ideas
and abilities, building him a loyal following around the world.
When the band folded, he
continued on to dozens of projects, including Cold Sky with Bag:man Greg
Segal, Tao Jones, and Sandbox Revolt with Enoch Hain of The Dickies.
Influenced by funk, progressive rock, jazz and avant-garde, George
easily filled out his schedule with numerous recording sessions.
In the late ‘90’s Radai
helped forge the dark, intricate sound of Ritual, whose CD will be
released later this year.
Bag: Theory’s sound is
bass-dependent, and George relishes the task. He is part pulse, part
voice, and all soul. It is hard to be indifferent when George Radai
expresses his imagination and intellect through his row of basses. It is
not hard to understand why so many respect his turf in the kingdom of
improvisation.
