BAG: THEORY'S NOTES FROM THE TRENCHES
Multi-flavored Observations by M. SEGAL (10/10/02)

Hello friends, the curious, natural enemies and unnatural fans:

The rollicking road to ‘being noticed’ continues with its usual fitful zeal. We’ve had many great gigs, lots of magic moments, indeed. We’ve also had a few total downers that I’m really glad are now well behind us.

The string of residency shows at ‘Zen Sushi’ didn’t exactly pack ‘em in, but those that bothered to come were treated to some absolutely grand performances. Our last alleged date there was cancelled, literally, as we unloaded our gear and began dragging it into the venue. Some of you might remember that I sat outside the place for 3 hours, detesting the new-found occupation of turning away at least 30 pals and paying customers in general. With all due respect to our buddy Jason Heath, who totally busted his ass attempting to make everything work, and the kind, professional attitude of manager Adam Biddreman, the venue owners seemed to sabotage them at every turn. It’s a great place to play (both the upstairs and downstairs stages) and I hope the ‘top dogs’ get their act together.

Our gig for the marijuana legalization coalition, NORML (if you want to call it a gig) was a stinker from the minute we got there. To those who showed, I apologize that we went on so damn late, and that parking was a fiasco. To those that didn’t make it, perhaps due to the rain, boy I’m pleased you’re time was not wasted. The most we got out of it was a few new friends and a digital recording of the hour-plus set. That’s better than nothing, I guess.

A real bright spot the last few months was the discovery of a fabulous old dump called ‘Rumors’, which resides in the hinterlands of North Hollywood. Jonathan, ace guitarist of Backbiter, invited us to gig there with his new rocking outfit The Motorcycle Black Madonas. We’ve been back a few times, and will be there again Saturday, October 12th. The night will feature The Wedding’s Off, and Keith Morris’ (of Circle Jerks fame) new band, Midget Handjob. We’ll be back at ‘Rumors’ again on November 9th with Jon Wahl and The Amadans, and The Jack Brewer Band.

Bag: Theory intends to whip up a Christmas CD for one and all, with compositions culled from countless gig recordings.

Soon, all our local L.A. friends will be able to pick up our current release A Good Ass-Kicking Wears Many Faces at these fine establishments: Amoeba, Rockaway, and Aaron’s Records. And you can still get it on-line at trigonrecords.com and Amazon.com.

The journey continues…

Thank you for coming with us,

M.
